Module 1:
"Sums and Differences to 10"
"Sums and Differences to 10"
In this module, students:
What can you do at home to support the learning in this module?
- Become faster with adding and subtracting basic facts within 10.
- Increase understanding with how addition and subtraction work, like knowing that if you know what 3 + 5 is, you know what 5 + 3 is (commutative property), and that if you don't know what 8 - 3 is, you can make it into an addition sentence: 3 + ? = 8 (equals sign shows equivalence).
- Solve story problems.
What can you do at home to support the learning in this module?
- Ask your child for ways to take a number apart. "What are some ways to make 5?" (For example: 5 and 0, 1 and 4, 2 and 3).
- Ask your child to solve putting together stories with one number missing. "I have 5 crackers and you have some more crackers. We have 10 crackers altogether. How many do you have?"
- Practice counting from 1 to 100. "Let's hear you count as high as you can go!"
