Welcome to Math at Mallett in 2nd Grade! 

Second Grade mathematics is about:
  • extending understanding of place value to the hundreds.
  • building fluency with addition and subtraction, including using coins and bills.
  • using standard and metric units of measure. 
  • describing and analyzing shapes.

By the end of this year, students learn:
  • to count by ones to 999 from any number other than 1, and to count by 10 from any number.  
  • to solve a variety of addition and subtraction word problems. 
  • that 10 tens make one hundred, and that the century numbers (100, 200, 300, etc.) are made of 1 hundred, 2 hundreds, 3 hundreds, etc. 
  • the addend pairs for numbers 1-20.  
  • to describe and analyze shapes in terms of sides and angles. 
  • to measure and estimate length using both metric and standard units of measure.
